My Own Music History
is a coordinated set of hands-on materials to introduce and organize Western
music history for students. The students complete timelines and repertoire
sheets in relation to their own repertoire and performances. The Teacher
Start-up Special includes teacher reference materials, a sample of each
available student item, plus enough Repertoire Sheets for 6-8 students.
Reproducible materials included in the Teacher Notebook are the Italian for
Musicians Vocabulary Sheet, a music history crossword puzzle, and letters to
student and parent which introduce the MY OWN MUSIC HISTORY concept. Additional
student packets and repertoire sheets can be ordered as needed.
MY OWN MUSIC HISTORY is a project that
creates a history of a student's individual music study through the years, while
relating to music history as a whole. Age 8-adult. Group or private use. It can
be introduced in a single session with the teacher, after which students can
complete materials on their own with minimal lesson time. However unlimited
in-depth follow-up is easily added for students who have been accorded MY OWN
MUSIC HISTORY's organizational and informational foundation. The materials are
effective as the framework for follow-up sessions with group classes, camps, or
music appreciation classes. (For some free ideas on how to organize a camp with
a music history theme go to

MY OWN MUSIC HISTORY has four pedagogical
principles:
- Give students a brief historically structured overview within which
to organize details of history (the Milestones of Music History Chart)
- Have them put together their own visual and personally relevant
materials
- Associate a color with each period for visual clues to
characteristics of the period (i.e. Baroque=gold, Classical=blue,
Romantic=red, 20th Century=green))
- Follow up (or not!) as
desired by having students classify their own repertoire, learn about composers,
and keep a record of their performances through the years. The optional binder
can serve as their assignment notebook, thus passively exposing them to the
Milestones of Music History information each time they practice.
